Dolmabahce Palace (Dolmabahce Sarayi)

Dolmabahce Caddesi, Istanbul, 80680

The Basics

Designed to echo the contemporary style of luxurious European palaces, Dolmabahce Palace was the idea of Sultan Abdulmecid I. The last six sultans of the Ottoman Empire and the first president of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, all lived in the palace. Today it’s preserved as an extravagant museum, with the gilded details of the early 20th century still visible.

Tours are required to visit the palace, and many Istanbul half- and full-day sightseeing excursions combine Dolmabahce Palace with Topkapi Palace or a Bosphorus cruise.

Fantastic tour with a great tour guide.
Our guide Lutfullah made us feel very welcome from the start of the tour. We were lucky to have a private tour as no one else came that day. Lutfullah was knowledgeable and witty and answered all the questions we threw at him. Our favorite part was visiting Dolmabahçe palace and getting a guided tour inside the palace walls. Also, lunch was provided and it was really good. Overall we were satisfied with the tour, the only thing I would recommend is for everyone to check the weather if it is raining as umbrellas are not provided.

Bosphorus Full Day Tour: Bosphorus Cruise, Uskudar and Dolmabahce Palace
The tour is amazing we loved it going from Europe to Asia just crossing the Bosphorus it’s very exciting 😊😊. The only thing we dislike was our tour guide he wasn’t kind enough always in a rush, telling us hurry it’s no enough time for pictures etc.

Istanbul Boat Cruise and Dolmabahce Palace & Two Continents
This was an interesting tour. Our guide spoke English well and was friendly and informative. Unfortunately, it was pretty much a repeat of day 2 of our Best of Istanbul 2 day tour. The only part that was different was a bus ride to the Asian side and a look around from a coffee shop on a hill. This is an enjoyable tour, but after the 2 day tour we wished we had spent the day seeing something we hadn't seen before.

Bosphorus Full Day Tour: Bosphorus Cruise, Uskudar and Dolmabahce Palace
We started the tour at a small cafe overlooking the entire city! We had some coffee while our amazing tour guide Lutfi gave us a bit of the history of the city. The tour also passed through the spice bazaar where we were able to try different teas and Turkish delights. We were given some free time to roam around and then our tour guide met us for the next portion. He was very knowledgeable on teas and foods and would encourage us to try new things. My other favorite part of the tour was the Dolmabahce Palace. We were able to walk through with Lutfi giving us info throughout the palace and also sharing historical facts about the palace and the people who lived there. I also appreciate that even when we were stuck in traffic for a bit, our tour guide gave us info on surrounding neighborhoods, gave us recommendations, and also gave insight on the beautiful culture of Turkey. Lutfi was very kind and also knew when to sprinkle in some humor. He is very knowledgeable and is so excited to share this city with everyone. I highly recommend our friend Lutfi! I cant wait to keep in touch with the new friends made on this tour!

Art in the Palace

Be sure to take time to admire the large collection of oil paintings that hang on the walls of Dolmabahce Palace. Toward the end of the Ottoman Empire, European-style portraiture become more popular, and sultans would often commission portraits by artists for the residence. There is an annex to the palace that contains much of the oil painting collection.
