The Basics

Though the current Galata Bridge is the fifth version of the structure, the desire to cross the Golden Horn on foot goes back to Byzantine times. The Galata Bridge unites the Sultanahmet neighborhood, with its imperial mosques and Topkapi Palace, to the traditionally mercantile and shipping areas near the Karakoy port.

Many private and small-group Istanbul tours that cross the Galata Bridge also stop at the Egyptian Spice Bazaar, Galata Tower, the Karakoy neighborhood, and the Hagia Sophia.

Tour de force!
Erol was a fantastic tour guide - knowledgeable, well-paced and engaging, brimming with facts on everything from food, language, architecture, lifestyle, and eating and drinking customs, not to mention a span of history leaping between ancient times to the modern day! A great way to get to know the modern city - would highly recommend!

Multi Cultural Istanbul: Galata Tower - Fener and Balat - Golden Horn by Ferry
A super tour with Erol that gave me a view of Istanbul I might not have discovered on my own. From start to finish this was a wonderful tour of Istanbul, beginning at Galata tower, learning it's history and that of the area surrounding it, seeing the beautiful views from the top of the tower; exploring the charming neighborhoods of Fener and Balat, enjoying delicious Turkish desserts and tea at a local cafe; relaxing on the final leg on the ferry ride home. I would highly recommend this tour to everyone, it was such a pleasure and Erol is incredibly knowledgable and easy to be with.

Istanbul Modern City Walking: Taksim to Galata With Secret Passages
I booked this tour the day I arrived in Istanbul for the first time, such a pleasant experience, especially since I stayed in the Galata neighborhood so it gave me a good insight on what’s around, Erol did a fantastic job describing neighborhoods from the angle of a local. Highly recommended!

Istanbul Modern City Walking: Taksim to Galata With Secret Passages
This was a fantastic tour. I have been to the area many times but never appreciated all the things Erol shared with us. We loved seeing the beautiful backstreets and passages. We learned a bit about the history as well as the local food culture. Be prepared for a long, interesting walk. We went with children between the ages of 11 and 17. Erol was patient with all of us and made the tour interesting for everyone. I highly recommend this tour if you are new to Beyoglu or if you have been there many times.

Istanbul Modern City Walking: Taksim to Galata With Secret Passages
This was my fourth trip to Istanbul and even though there was a lockdown, I was able to see and learn so much more about Taksim! When they say secret passages - they MEAN secret passages ! Erol showed us all the hidden spots , short cuts - everything we could ask for and more! Erol is literally the best tour guide I’ve ever had in any city - and I’ve had the opportunity to visit many! The views from Galata are SPECTACULAR and to be able to know what your looking at makes it all that much more immersive and enjoyable! Take the tour , do not think twice!

When to Get There

Galata Bridge is usually full of activity, but is quieter in the morning. Arrive early to watch the fishermen and stroll without the crowds. During the day, the bridge is a busy transit way for people walking or driving between Eminonu and Karakoy, and it’s particularly lovely at sunset.

What to See From the Bridge

Due to its central location, the Galata Bridge offers stunning views of many of Istanbul’s historical sites. Look toward the Old City to see the Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace. See the New Mosque in Eminonu Square and Suleymaniye Mosque rising above it. To the northeast, spot Galata Tower perched above its namesake neighborhood. And of course, peer down the Bosphorus and its numerous ferry and other boats below.
