The Best Holiday and NYE Celebrations Around the World
These are the global celebrations worth traveling for during the holidays.
The Church of St. Anne and its tranquil courtyard are a popular stop on many tours of Jerusalem, offering visitors a reprieve from the bustling streets of the adjacent Muslim Quarter. The site is especially integral to Christianity-focused tours which visit the Virgin Mary’s birthplace alongside the Bethesda Pools where Jesus is said to have performed healings.
The Church of St. Anne is located north of the Temple Mount just inside the St. Stephen’s Gate (also known as the Lions’ Gate) entrance to the Old City of Jerusalem. You can avoid navigating the Old City’s hectic streets on your own by visiting the church on a guided walking tour.
The church is open Monday through Saturday from 8am to 12pm and 2pm to 5pm and closed on Sundays. Visit in the morning to join the Catholic masses held in the church or hear the church’s choir. If you do not arrive to hear the chorus of the official choir, you are likely to hear the singing of other visitors.
Built around 450, the Church of St. Anne is a magnificently preserved example of Crusader architecture. The asymmetrical fortress-like style of the building sets it apart from its surroundings and also creates its renown acoustics. Whether listening to your own voice along with your fellow visitors or the local choir, the church has a unique knack for transforming voices.
