The first stop is Caesarea, located halfway between Tel Aviv and Haifa. It’s a city that Herod the Great built and dedicated to Caesar Augustus more than 2,000 years ago. This walking tour wanders through the city’s archaeological ruins, excavations and a large Roman theater — a fascinating journey back in time.
Then, it’s on to the port town of Haifa, built in tiers extending from the Mediterranean Sea up the north slope of Mount Carmel. Visit Baha'i Gardens, one of the most popular places in the Middle East. The gardens, forming a staircase of 19 terraces on a mountain slope, include graveled paths, hedges and flower beds that are groomed and nurtured to perfection. Soak up beautiful panoramas of Haifa, the Galilee Hills and the Mediterranean Sea. Below, the gold-domed building is the Shrine of the Báb, the final resting place of the prophet of the Baha'i faith.
From here, travel to the Rosh HaNikra grottoes, off the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in Western Galilee. These cavernous tunnels are formed by sea activity against the soft chalk rock. Long ago, the grottoes could only be seen from the sea or by experienced divers, but fortunately for you, a cable car now gives you easy access.
Finally, the tour concludes with a trip to Acre, sometimes called Akko, one of the oldest cities in the world. Spend some time exploring the subterranean city, a complex world of underground tunnels and halls that were built in medieval times and hidden for centuries under the rubble in northern Israel. The remains of this Crusader town lie almost intact, both above and below today's street level.
Before heading back to Jerusalem, walk back through the Old City Market to pick up a souvenir from this fascinating day of discovery.
